"Semi-Pro" stars Will Ferrell as Jackie Moon, the full of himself owner of the fictional American Basketball Association (ABA) team the Flint Tropics. Moon, who purchased the team with money earned from his disco music hit "Love Me Sexy" (the film is set in 1976), acts as team coach, pre-game announcer, halftime entertainer, and power forward. Because of shaky finances, a weak team, and poor home attendance, the Tropics are about to fold when the ABA merges with the NBA.
Ferrell's performance as a man trying to save his franchise by doing whatever it takes is hilarious. In an effort to boost attendance he even wrestles a bear after a game. When the bear inevitably escapes from the cage, Moon yells to the fleeing crowd "there will be no refund. Your only refund will be escaping this death trap with your life!"
The Movie: Solid with a number of belly laughs, a funny twist on the classic underdog sports story, strong language not suitable for children. Available on DVD.
The Players:
Will Ferrell - if there was a Lard Butt Hall of Fame for acting in sports movies, he would be the first inductee. He gives another over-the-top, funny performance in Semi-Pro.
Woody Harrelson - hits a three pointer with his portrayal of former Boston Celtics back-up point guard Ed Monnix.
Will Arnett - gives a slam dunk performance as a boozy former player turned color commentator Lou Redwood.
Andrew Daly - steals scenes as the straight laced, plaid pants wearing play by play announcer Dick Pepperfield.
