A salute to the outstanding month of October

Although November has the greatest day on the Lard Butt calendar, namely Thanksgiving (with all of the turkey and football), I would like to honor what is certainly the greatest sports month of the year:  October.

October is the only month that has all three major sports in season.  Major League Baseball, the NFL, and the NBA (not to mention the NHL and Major League Soccer), all play games during the 10th month.  Additionally, October sees college football coming on strong with more than its share of big upsets and national ranking changes.

I was fortunate to attend a couple of sporting events this past month, a college football game and an NBA game.

On October 10th I was in Missoula, Montana to watch the Montana Grizzlies defeat Cal Poly at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.  Despite the unseasonably chilly temperatures (it was 25 degrees and windy at kickoff), it was a terrific afternoon of football.  When we found our seats in the cold stadium, my dad handed me a personal size pizza and a viking (a giant, breaded, deep-fried meatball on a stick) and said in true Lard Butt spirit, "you have to eat to keep warm!"

My next outing was on the 29th of the month when I saw the Portland Trail Blazers lose a nail-biter to the Denver Nuggets at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon.   The weather for that game was much more pleasant, and the brewed in Oregon beer was tasty!

October is a truly legendary month.  Did I mention my birthday is on October 1st?
