Movie Review (Winter Olympics): Do You Believe In Miracles?

Do You Believe.jpg

If you need any motivation to get excited about this year's Winter Olympics, I suggest watching the documentary "Do You Believe In Miracles".  Released in 2001, this film chronicles the unlikely victory of the 1980 U.S. hockey team over the world dominating squad from the Soviet Union.

In what must be the single greatest sports moment of the Cold War era (not including Rocky Balboa's defeat of Ivan Drago in the movie Rocky IV), the college aged US team played an older, much more experienced group of Soviets.  The documentary shows footage from the game, as well as interviews from players, coaches, and journalists involved in the event.

In addition to the inspiring underdog story, there are also funny moments.  The matching baby blue sweaters worn by the ABC commentators will bring a smile, as will a list of motivational sayings used by U.S. head coach Herb Brooks (including my favorite "...you're playing worse everyday, and right now you're playing like the middle of next month.").

I recommend "Do You Believe In Miracles."  I also recommend that the commentators at this year's Olympics wear matching sweaters.
